WyScan: Android Wifi Configuration from Barcode

QR code

Update, 30 June, 2010: This is now a part of the Barcode Scanner. Get the beta from the ZXing Project Page, and it has support for WiFi configuration. You can generate codes at the ZXing generator. Select "WiFi configuration" from the dropdown at the top.

Update, 25 May, 2010: I've changed the encoding to WIFI:S:myHome;T:WPA;P:supersecret;;. This makes the previous program incompatible with the new one. Please update your program if you have the old version.

WyScan is a utility to configure your wifi settings automatically. Instead of typing out complex network names and passwords, you scan a barcode containing the information. WyScan will set up the network, and connect to it! WyScan does not need a data plan.

Download WyScan here, and keep it installed on your Android phone. When you are at a friend's place, ask them to generate a barcode for their network configuration, and scan it with WyScan to setup the network.

For WyScan to work, you need a barcode scanner installed. Get the "Barcode Scanner" app from the Android Market.

Update, 25 May, 2010. The encoding has changed. If you want to generate your own barcodes, use any QR code generator on a string with WIFI:S:ssid;T:(WPA|WEP);P:password;;. Here are two examples: WIFI:S:myHome;T:WEP;P:01234abcde;;, WIFI:S:myHome;T:WPA;P:supersecret;;.
